Baguazhang

Baguazhang is a traditional Chinese martial art that is renowned for its unique combination of circular movements, dynamic footwork, and internal martial arts principles. It is one of the three main internal martial arts, along with Tai Chi Chuan and Xing Yi Quan. The creation of Baguazhang is attributed to Dong Haichuan in the late 19th century.

The name "Baguazhang" means "Eight Trigram Palm," which refers to the Taoist concept of Bagua, symbolized by eight trigrams that represent various natural phenomena and their interrelationships.

In Baguazhang, there are a wide variety of techniques along with weapons. There are different types of attacks (strikes) with fists, palms, fingers, elbows, kicks, throws, joint locks, and curved or circular footwork.

Practitioners often perform techniques while walking in circular patterns. These circular motions facilitate evasion, fluidity, and adaptability in combat situations. Practitioners can effectively redirect an opponent’s force and create openings for counterattacks by moving in circles. Baguazhang emphasizes the use of open-hand strikes, chops, and pushes rather than closed-fist punches which are commonly found in other martial arts. The advantage of Baguazhang is the practice of moving behind the opponent so that the attacker cannot harm the practitioner.

Baguazhang improves physical fitness including the immune system, circulation, digestion, and posture. It develops balance, coordination and stability, helps to relax and reduce depression and stress, increase self-confidence and martial arts skills. It enhances internal power through practices of qigong, standing meditation (zhan zhuang), and specific breathing exercises. This internal power enhances striking power, resilience, and martial strength.

Overall, Baguazhang is not only an effective martial art for self-defense but also a path for personal growth, health benefits, meditation, and spiritual cultivation. It has gained popularity both in China and internationally for its effectiveness as a martial art and its holistic approach to physical and mental well-being.
